The Aalto vase was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936, who won a competition by the Iittala glassworks to create items for the World Expo in Paris. This vase is enveloped in an aura of mystery regarding the source of inspiration for its truly original shape: fjord, lake, amoeba, tree trunk, it's not exactly clear what inspired Aalto in the design of this famous vase, but it surely had to be a shape from nature. Aalto himself never revealed where he drew the inspiration for this vase from, instead, he ironically referred to it as "the leather pants of an Eskimo woman." This vase, with its organic form, has become a symbol of Finland. Still produced today as from its beginning, with three layers of glass blown by mouth into wooden molds, it is now part of the permanent collection of numerous museums around the world, including the MOMA in New York.
