270 mm high transparent vase designed by Alvar Aalto 1936 for Iittala.
The Aalto vase was designed by Alvar Aalto in 1936, who won the competition organized by the Iittala glassworks in order to produce objects to take to the world exhibition in Paris. An aura of mystery hovers over this vase regarding its source of inspiration for its very original shape: fjord, lake, amoeba, tree trunk, it is not known exactly what inspired Aalto in designing this famous vase, but it certainly had to be a shape coming from nature. Aalto himself never revealed where the inspiration for this vase came from but limited himself to ironically calling it the Eskimo woman's leather trousers. This organically shaped vase has become the very symbol of Finland. Produced, still today as from its origins, with three layers of mouth-blown glass on wooden molds, today it is part of the permanent collection of many museums around the world including the MOMA in New York.
